On May 4, 1997, New York Times, carried a front page column on the trials and tribulations of Stan, a 48-year old manager, who was trying desperately to keep up with his colleagues and competitors who were better qualified than him, who had greater verve and energy, were IT savvy, had a wider worldview, were generally multiskilled, often unmarried and therefore with less responsibilities of family.
The article talked of how the first parking lot to be occupied at the office block was Stan's because he was there at seven in the morning so he could go to the office gym and exercise to keep fit. He was at his desk by 8.30 AM because he needed to keep up with his work and prove himself better and more efficient than those in their 20s. He worked past 7.00 PM every day. He worked on Saturdays and took work home for Sunday. He had not had a family outing on weekends for many years. Neither did he have a vacation in the last five years. He had spent time learning the use of computers and continued to spend time learning the new languages that emerge every few years. He lost four jobs in the last eight years; had been a victim every few years of mergers, downsizing, organizational restructuring, and business re-engineering in each of the four companies. He got the present job despite the selection panel having some reservations on hiring someone past 40 years of age, not computer literate and physically not âon the bounce.â He wanted to prove them wrong. In any case, at 48, he could not take another chance, and make another change. In the process, Stan was running as fast as he could, just to keep up with the boys. His table was covered with spreadsheets, partly out of necessity and also because it helped project the image of âone who knows and is with it.â
